Class dates: July 5 - August 5 | Monday—Thursday 9:00 am - 12:00pm
Pre-requisite: must have completed 1st grade
The purpose of this course is to provide a fun-filled introduction to a lifetime of sailing. The game-inspired curriculum covers learning the names of boat parts, finding wind direction, learning to steer with the tiller, and fundamental seamanship skills.  The class enables the kids to become familiar with water safety and dinghy sailing, and to feel comfortable around the yacht club and on the water.

Novice Sailing (Beginner)
Class dates: June 28 – August 5 | Monday—Thursday 8:30 am - 12:00pm
Pre-requisite: must have completed 2nd grade
Novices will learn to sail “solo” and while learning the fundamentals of rigging, boat handling, points of sail, safety and
seamanship. By the end of the summer, sailors will be able to sail around a race course.

Sabot Cruising Program
Class dates: June 28 –August 5 | Monday—Thursday 8:30 am– 12:00am
Pre-requisite: must have completed Novice program
The emphasis of this class will be to learn how to enjoy the sport of sailing, learn seamanship skills, and sail around the bay. The hope is that the kids will learn to love the act of sailing and be keen to race in the future.

Sabot Pre-Racing Sailing (Adv. Beginner)
Class dates: June 28 – August 5 | Monday—Thursday 1:00 am - 4:30pm
Pre-requisite: must have completed Novice program
This class is for the sailor that wants to build confidence in his or her skills before entering the competitive Sabot racing scene. Sailors will continue to work on the vocabulary

Sabot C Racing Program (Intermediate)
Class dates: June 28 –August 5 | Monday—Thursday 1:00 pm– 4:30pm
Pre-requisite: must have completed Novice program and be able to rig their boat by themselves before class begins
The curriculum will cover race tactics, sail trim, boat handling skills and the Racing Rules of Sailing. Sailors will participate in weekly Balboa Bay Fleet regattas on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Sailors in this class are encouraged to compete in regattas outside of class time. The Sabot racing schedule will be published and trailers will be available for events.

Sabot A & B Racing Program (Advanced)
Class dates: June 28 –August 5 | Monday—Thursday 9:30 pm– 4:30 pm * Lunch break 12:00pm—1:00pm
Pre-requisite: see INSA move-up rules
Sailors are introduced to the physics of racing sailboats.  Practice will focus on using sail controls, body weight and sail theory to make their boat go faster through drills and specialized coaching. Sailors will participate in weekly Balboa Bay Fleet
regattas. Sailors are expected to travel to regattas in Southern California outside of class time in preparation for a strong finish at Jr. Sabot Nationals. The Sabot racing schedule will be published and trailers will be available for events.

CFJ 1 Class
Class dates: June 28 –August 5 | Monday—Thursday 1:30 pm– 5:30 pm
Pre-requisite: at least 12 years old or over 100 lbs.
This class is for first year CFJ sailors and sailors transiting from a Sabot to a CFJ. Sailors will have the opportunity to practice skippering and crewing in the boat. Participants need not have a partner to sign up for this class; coaches will make pairing assignments daily. This class will focus on proper rigging/ de-rigging, boat handling, sail trim (including spinnaker work) and strengthen race tactics through drills and practice races. Sailors will compete in weekly Balboa Bay Fleet regattas.
This class is great prep for sailors planning to compete in High School sailing by regularly practicing team racing and short course races.

CFJ 2 Class
Class dates: June 28 –August 5
Monday—Thursday   1:30 pm– 5:30 pm
Pre-requisite: must have participated in HS sailing, FJ Fall `09 or FJ Spring `10 After School Sailing
This class is for CFJ sailors who are looking to improve their skills and better their results on the race course. Sailors will work to fine tune their boat handling and racing skills. The curriculum includes sail trim for speed, spinnaker work, regatta preparation, racing rules and tactics. A strong focus for this class is to train for and perform well at majors competitions throughout the summer. Sailors will compete in weekly Balboa Bay Fleet regattas in the ocean. All sailors are expected to sail in local regattas, such as So Cal Junior Olympics and CFJ National Champions.

Laser Racing Program
Class dates: July 2 –August 6 | Fridays 12:00 pm– 4:30 pm
Pre-requisite: at least 12 years old. Must have own boat
Limited to 8 sailors, class fee: $200 per sailor. This program will be open to all Non Calm sailors with an interest in improving their singlehanded sailing. Sessions will focus on the transition from the Sabot or double handed boat to the Laser with emphasis on rigging and tuning, sail theory, boat speed, and kinetics. Classes will be primarily taught in the ocean. This class will be high intensity, as class time is limited. Participation in LIYC Tuesday “Night Flights” in addition to class time is strongly encouraged. A coach will be on hand to help with rigging, tuning tricks and pointers on Tuesday nights.


Advanced Double Handed Racing Team

Pre-requisite: Director/ Head Coach approval

Must coordinate own sailing partner

This team is intended for the most experienced racers that do not wish to participate in the full length summer program. These sailors will travel as a team to 420 National’s, So Cal Junior Olympics and CFJ National’s. This program will consist of one on-site clinic day prior to each regatta as well as full on-the water coaching during each regatta. The clinics will focus on preparing for high caliber events, particularly boat preparation and maintenance, regatta strategy, fine tune boat handling skills, racing rules, and tactics. The race team will be lead by NHYC Head Coach Payson Infelise, payson@nhyc.org.

Each clinic is $40 per person and will include regatta coaching.
