The 2010 Governor’s Cup is on!
Day one of the 44th annual Governor’s Cup Match Race, hosted by the Balboa Yacht Club is in the books and the two NHYC teams are holding their own with some of the best youth match racers in the world. No that was not a typo, NHYC indeed earned the right to send two teams this year.
Representing NHYC are: Andrew Mason, Peter Kinney, and Brooks Clark who hold a day one record of 3-4 and are avenging their nail biting second place finish in 2009. Also representing NHYC are Chris Segerblom, Conner Bathen and Kieran Chung who earned an automatic berth in the event by virtue of winning the Rose Cup Match Race Clinic earlier in the Spring and share the lead with a record of 6-0 after day one.
Both teams have been working very hard this spring to tune up their match race skills with NHYC head coach Payson Infelise on the club GC 21 and a borrowed bot kindly donated for the season by John O’Donnell.
Both NHYC teams definitely felt the hone field advantage on Wednesday as the Non-calms boarded the Jim Webster to watch the action and cheer on the boys from NHYC.
It is the intent of the race committee to run a double round robin between the 13 teams followed by a finals series. Racing is taking place right off the beach between the piers, providing excellent viewing even if you can’t get on the water to watch.
For those NHYC supporters who are stuck in the office or out of town can follow all the action online:
