Junior Sailing

Newport Harbor Yacht Clubs junior sailors are affectionately referred to as "Non-Calms". Local lore suggests the term was derived from the Naval term "Non-Com" referring to non-commissioned officers. This historical reference only seems fitting as our junior sailors hone their sailing skills through our year-round sailing programs and various club activities. Non-Calms enjoy learning to sail and racing in a variety of boats including the Naples Sabots, Lasers, FJ's, 420's, and beyond. NHYC Non-Calms enjoy a strong history of racing success locally, nationally, and worldwide.

Sailing Programs are for members immediate children only (not grandchildren).  Junior Membership is available, please contact our Membership Director Joie Kelly at joiekelly@nhycstaff.org to begin the membership process.  The process can take a few months, so start early!

    •  2018 Non-Calm Summer Program

The Non-Calm Summer program begins the last week in June and runs through the first week in August with Sabot Nationals being held at LBYC August 7-9. Most classes are held Monday -Thursday. Beginner level classes are held in the morning, and intermediate to racing classes are held in the afternoon. Non-Calm sailing can begin after a child has finished first grade, beginning as a “Pollywog,” and can advance into Sabots and CFJs through high school. The program is focused on improving racing skills in preparation for regattas throughout the year while also having fun learning the sport of sailing and being with friends!
